The British U15 Handicap Doubles 2024
Apr 27, 2024 Bristol Paul Weaver
The British U15 Handicap Doubles 2024 took place on 27th April at Bristol!
Final result: James Galvin & Edward Wescott bt Gabriel Franklin & Zach Hartin 8/3
The Players:
Gabriel Franklin & Zach Hartin
James Galvin & Edward Wescott
Matthew Galvin & Ben Brown
Millie Bonnick & Georgie Moynagh
Hal Finch & Archie Finch
Rose Kay & Oliver Kay
Two qualifying groups took place which provided some great Tennis and a glimpse of what developing talent we can look forward to, with the top two pairs from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
Matthew Galvin and Ben Brown battled hard but faced some tough handicap differences which meant that they didn’t manage to get through the group stage.
A special mention for Millie Bonnick and Georgie Moynagh who were playing in their first ever competitive Real Tennis matches. They had dived into the deep end (also known as the Hazard End) and they fought with smiles on their faces and they can be very proud of themselves – BRTC certainly is.
The first semi-final saw The Hyde taking on Canford. Fantastic to welcome Rosie and Oliver Kay again and to see how well they are progressing. They took on another new pairing of Zack Hartin and Gabriel Franklin from Canford. The Hyde were facing a tough handicap difference but their experience seemed too much as they took a 5/2 lead….however, the quick-learning boys from Canford were improving with every shot and managed to win the match 6/5 in an epic semi-final!
The second semi-final was an all-Bristol affair between the Finch Twins (Archie and Hal) and Edward Wescott and James Galvin (The Mighty Mice). Surely it couldn’t match the first semi-final? Well it did. And after much changing of the lead, Edward and James managed to win 6/5 in another great advert for junior Real Tennis.
So the final was a level match between Gabriel Franklin/Zach Hartin from Canford and Edward Wescott /James Galvin from BRTC. Gabriel and Zach played some fantastic Tennis including shot of the day from Zach with his
crosscourt into the Tambour which would have troubled even the best. However, the Bristol pair were on fire and were deserved winners at 8/3.
Thank you so much to the players and the parents for your continued support and enthusiasm – it does not go unnoticed. It was a brilliant day with some great Tennis and I slept soundly knowing that the future of Real Tennis is in good hands.
Cheers,
Ben Coleman
