This year was Holyport’s first year hosting this championship. We were very glad to have almost double the entrants of the previous year.
It is a level tournament for singles. Special mention goes to Tony Crook who beat the second seed Paul Danby in his singles semi-final to meet John Ward in the final, who up to that point had not dropped a game.
As for the doubles, in order to encourage as many players as possible the lowest handicap player was paired with the highest, second-lowest with second-highest and so on. This ensured that there were lots of close and enjoyable doubles matches.
The doubles final was contested first, between John Ward and his partner Richard Batchelor, against Tony Crook and Ian Steele who again upset the odds to get to the final. It was a good match but it was always going to be an uphill task for Tony and Ian, with John being by far the strongest player in the draw. Nevertheless the match was close for the most part, but John and Richard came through 8/4 in the end.
We then went straight into the singles final and Tony having given so much to the doubles final didn’t have a lot left in the tank for this game. It went as expected with John Ward winning this one too.
Many thanks to all who entered. It was good to have people travelling from far and wide to play at Holyport, such as Ian Steele (Leamington) and Jeremy Fairbrother (Cambridge). We look forward to having everyone from this year’s tournament together with new eligible players next year.
