Over 60 Amateur Singles and Doubles Championship: 21 - 23 March 2025

The group winners were Simon Shenkman, Simon Barker and David Watson with Nigel Pendrigh defeating 2024 winner Ashley Deakin to secure the 4th semi final spot. Excellent performances in the group stage from Paul Norris, Patrick Lawrence and Jeremy Taylor also meant that the group winners were pushed to the limit, with the shorter match format producing a number of exciting matches.

In the semi finals, an inspired Pendrigh saved match points against Shenkman to win 9-8 much to the surprise of a packed dedans before Barker was forced to retire 7-5 down against Watson due to injury. It was then déjà vu in the final, with Watson suffering a nasty collision with the main wall when 8-6 down against Pendrigh, meaning that the Petworth player was able to retain the title that he originally won in 2023.

In the Thomas Trophy, the handicap doubles tournament for over 60 participants, the winners were the all Manchester pair of Tony Bray and Tony Lawton who defeated Norris and Taylor 10-7 in the final much to the delight of the home crowd. At the presentations, Steve Brockenshaw and James Asher were praised for marking the weekend whilst Stella and chef Gareth were also thanked for putting on a tremendous dinner on the Saturday evening.

It is hoped that a similarly strong cohort travels to Manchester in 2026 for another edition of the Kershaw Cup and Thomas Trophy. All eyes will be on Nigel Pendrigh to see if he can win his 3rd title…
