A competitive group started the morning, with Andy Bishop/Hugo Axel-Berg squeezing past Andrew Leslau/Nick Geere by 6/4 in the crucial match. Bob Compton/Peter Mason fought valiantly with limited success against significantly better handicaps.
James Eadie/Rupert Henson gave a good account of themselves in the semi-final, losing 3/8 to the eventual winners, Charles Human/Tony Munsey. Top seeds David Watson/Richard Compton-Burnett beat Bishop/Axel-Berg by 8/2 in the other half.
The final was a magnificent display of doubles in which the underdogs (on handicap, at least by some distance), Charles Human & Tony Munsey maintained a high level of play over two hours to defeat the top seeds and champions, David Watson & Richard Compton-Burnett 6/4 3/6 6/3. Human was consistent and powerful in the back court while Munsey was calm and assured throughout, especially on the galleries. Home court advantage was, of course, helpful but this was an upset of the handicap rating by some margin.
