*Over 60 Amateur Doubles
A highly enjoyable day saw the Amateur Over 60's doubles concluded in fairly conclusive fashion by Paul Weaver & Mick Dean, winning all sets played for the loss of only 4 games (in 6 sets).
Other pairs all proved competitive, and the identities of all places from 2-5 were in doubt until the last two group matches. Paul Danby and Willie Wilks proved unlucky inlosing 2 sets 5-6, including one to Jill Newby and David Bevan-Thomas from 5-2 up. Jill and David played some really competitive tennis, but the partnership faded slightly later on in the vital match against John Burnett & Bruce Prescott despite the latter's back problems which hampered him all day. With two fit men they might well have done better than the one win they managed. In spite of this, they put up a fine show in the 3rd place play-off in losing to Danby/Wilks 2-6. They played some fine aggressive tennis, aided only slightly by a problem with the acoustics. One can only be impressed by Paul Danby's continued competitiveness and the thoroughbred qualities of Willie Wilks, both at well beyond the minimum age bracket.
Gordon Robertson seemed to improve throughout the day, and his 3 wins with Colin Butler moved them to the final, where the score did not do full justice to some very competitive rallies and a tight first set which teetered at 2-1 deuce for a critical moment. The deciding factor overall was clearly Paul Weaver's enormous speed around the court and the pace of stroke which this permitted, with which no opponent could fully counter with any consistency. As one might expect of the age-group world champion.
