Singles semi-finals

S Virgona (2) beat B Sayers (3) 6/2 3/6 6/4 3/6 6/2

After a tight start Bryn Sayers briefly established a 2-1 lead, but Steve Virgona came back strongly levelling to 2-all and then, after a long and close fifth game, continues to dominate the open play and closed out the set 6/2. SV took the first game in the second set (six in a row) but BS rallied to 2-all and then opened a 4-2 lead. SV fought back to 3-4 but BS played some inspired Tennis, hitting his targets to close out the set 6-3, and level the match.

The third set was equally tight with both players staying within a game of each other to 4-all. But it was SV who won the final stages to take the set 6/4 and an important lead in the match. He continued his run into the fourth set to establish a 2-0 lead (four games in a row). However, now BS countered to take four straight games and a 4-2 lead. A long seventh game was won but SV by BS then tightened his shot production to win the next two and the set 6/3, once again levelling the match.

With the momentum, BS took the first two games but then SV took control and powered through the next six straight games to take the set 6/2 and the match by three games to two. Another classic encounter between these two great rivals.

T Chisholm (4) beat R Fahey (1) 6/2 6/2 2/6 1/6 6/4

Tim Chisholm started strongly, building a 3-0 lead in the first set. World Champion, Rob Fahey, rallied clawing his way back into the set to trail 2-4, but TC regained the ascendency to take the set, 6/2. A tight first four games in the second were shared but once again TC dug in and hit his targets, taking the next four games and the set 6/2, and a two set lead.

RF now rallied, taking an early 2-1 lead, extending to 3-2, and then remained calm to take the next three games and the set 6/2, and reduce the deficit. RF hit his targets with much more consistency than in the first two sets. He then carried the momentum into the fourth to race into a 3-0 lead before TC struck back to 1-3. But RF wasn’t to be denied and his shot making became irrepressible to take the fourth set 6/1, and level the match.

A tense first four games in the fifth were shared as both players sensed their opportunity. TC played three superb games to 5-2, before RF saved two match points and then recovered to 4-5. But it couldn’t save RF in the next game when TC converted his third match point to claim the set 6/4, a memorable five set victory.

Singles final

S Virgona (2) beat T Chisholm (4) 6/3 6/2 6/4

Tim Chisholm won the opening game, but Steve Virgona responded taking the next three. TC fought back to 3-all, but SV took the next three games with an impressive selection of shots, 6/3. The players shared the first pair of games in the second set, but then SV stamped his authority taking the next three games to 4-1, volleying impossible looking winners with elegance. They shared a pair of quick games to 5-2. SV worked his way to set point in the next game which he converted with a main wall boast, 6/2, and a two set lead.

Six tight games were shared at the start of the third set. But then SV again pulled away to lead 5-3, covering every inch of the court. A mercurial game followed from TC to 4-5. In what was to prove the final game, TC successfully defended two match points, but SV converted the third to take the set 6/4, winning by three sets to love. In winning his second British Open, he regained the title he had won two years ago.

Doubles semi-finals

C Chapman & S Virgona (4) beat K Booth & B Matthews (2) 6/0 6/0 6/0

The first semi-final saw a dominant display by the fourth seeds, Steve Virgona and Chris Chapman, who blew away the second seeds, Ben Matthews and Kieran Booth, without conceding a game. SV and CC have formed a strong partnership, which dealt with everything BM and KB could muster, combining masterful volleys with consistent ground strokes.

B Sayers & R Smith (3) beat T Chisholm & R Fahey (1) 6/4 6/3 6/3

The second semi-final saw an extremely close contest between top seeds, Rob Fahey and Tim Chisholm, who were taking on third seeds, Bryn Sayers and Ricardo Smith. The match was finely balanced up to 3-all, but then BS/RS took two decisive games. RF/TC rallied to 4-5 but were forced to defend two sets points in the next game, which BS/RS converted on the second point. First set to the British pair 6/4, and one set lead. After another close start to the second set, BS/RS struck again to establish a 4-1 lead. BS covered the back wall whilst RS volleyed superbly. RF/TC broke the sequence by interchanging their positions, but soon it was 5-2 after yet another strong game from BS/RS. RF/TC now dug deep to reduce the deficit to 3-5 but faced three set points in the next game. One was enough and gave BS/RS the second set 6/3, and a two set lead.

First blood to BS/RS in the third set as they quickly established a two game lead. RF served tight railroads and TC found his targets but the British pair kept their two game advantage to 5-3. Both pairs were playing at their best, with BS/RS defending brilliantly against the onslaught of RF/TC volleys. Then the third seeds won back the serve, converted the first point to set up two match points, which BS won at the first attempt, winning the set 6/3 and the match by three sets to love.

Doubles final

Bryn Sayers & Ricardo Smith started strongly taking the first two games, before Steve Virgona & Chris Chapman responded taking three straight games, 3-2. BS/RS rallied to level, before SV took charge and steered his pair through the next three games, and the set 6/3. Once again BS/RS took an early lead but SV/CC rallied before BS/RS took three more games to lead 5-1. After a brief fight back to 2-5, BS/RS closed down the set 6/2, and levelled the match.

The pairs shared the first four games in the third, but then superb defence by CC and world class attack by SV took four straight games and the set 6/2, and a two sets to one lead. SV/CC maintained the momentum into the fourth set to lead 1-0, before their opponents played an exceptional couple of games to lead 2-1. SV/CC then eased away to 4-2 via two SV winning galleries. Another pair of games shared and the score reached 5-3. BS saved a match point and then recovered to 4-5. Three more match points saved in the next game and then 5-all. The eleventh game produced another two match points; it only required the first of these for Steve Virgona to claim his eighth British Open Doubles title and the first for partner Chris Chapman.
