Inter Schools Doubles Championships 2011

Sunday 13th Feb. 40 Pairs from 20 different schools played on 5 different courts

1^st Pairs (at Oratory. 5 pairs)

Radley A (Tom Buckley & Ben Boddington) bt Clifton (Freddie Kalifyan & Johnny Williams) 6-2

An impressive win by the Radley pair, against doughty opposition who just triumphed in the semi-final over Radley B (Dan Brownlee & Gus McAlpine) 6-5. The latter had pushed their A team very close in the early stages. Rugby (Clarke & Wilson) acquitted themselves well, beating Oratory (Eadle & Huysinga) before losing a very decent match to Radley B in the play-offs.

2^nd Pairs (Hardwick. 7 pairs)

Clifton, a very tidy pair indeed,€ won this event in a canter, with a 100% record, beating 2^nd placed St Edwards A, who in turn, pipped Radley C on games won. 4^th was Canford (who did beat Radley), followed by Oratory, Warwick and Rugby who narrowly failed to€ beat Warwick in a close 5-6 set. Only one pair was undefeated, and only one gained no wins (and that only just!). This was a long day at Hardwick, and says much for general stamina of competitors and spectators alike.

Colts (Radley. 9 pairs)

Lewis Williams and Will Shortridge blitzed this competition, beating Radley (Robinson & Buckley) 6-0 in the final, who had in turn played really well to defeat Portsmouth GS (Giles Gunning & Jess Garside), though the latter had run the winners very close (4-6) in the group match.

In the 2^nd group, Eton played well enough in gaining 4^th spot overall to suggest that they might have coped in the top group, beating Charterhouse and Radley B into 5^th & 6^th respectively. Clifton (7^th) finished well to beat both Canford pairs.

Senior Handicap (Oxford. 9 pairs)

Bradfield A triumphed here over Cranleigh, with all matches played on a rolling handicap. Noble performances were seen from Warwick, Radley, Abingdon & Charterhouse.

Junior Handicap (Holyport. 9 pairs)

Westbourne House repeated their win of last year in a final against another Westbourne pair, just pipping Ludgrove into 3^rd place. Abingdon, Windlesham House & Kingston GS all contributed to a very closely contested day€s tennis.
