Hatfield won 3/2

In the second doubles match Hatfield’s Mike Smith and Andy Lloyd proved steadier than Leamington Chairman Guy Stanton and Chris French. Simon Heck’s ground shots were too consistent and incisive for Rob Allsop who showed flashes of brilliance but Nick Lloyd wrapped up the match before lunch with a hard fought win against Richard Yorke-Long who belied the 12 handicap difference with an impressive first set win; unfortunately tiredness set in and Lloyd cruised through with ease in the final 2 sets. The Hatfield team celebrated with a glass of pre prandial Pol Roger champagne. In the dead rubbers, Ed Steele highlighted his recent improvement with a hard fought win over Mark Rayner. Had the match gone to 2/2, Leamington’s pairing of Patrick Sutton and Robert Frost in all probability would have taken the tie as they were too strong for Jonathan Fisher and Simon Brewerton.

Pol Roger champagne was as ever gratefully received by the winners. Tom Granville was thanked for his excellent marking and top class tennis balls.
