* Category G Open Championship (Level Singles for Hcaps 60+) 2021

It was wonderful to see competitive play at The Oratory once again. We were delighted to welcome players from near and far with plenty of competitive tennis being played throughout. In the main draw, Peter Norris and Bill Ingram made their way through to the semi-finals in straight sets, with some tight serving and consistent ground strokes. Jenny Jones and Damian Mayer had an incredibly close match, which could have gone either way, finishing 6/5 in the 3^rd to Jenny. What a match! Equally tight was the 3 set match between Edward Smith & Hugh Antrobus, finishing 6/3 in Edward’s favour. Onto the semi-finals, Bill Ingram won a close first set against Edward, but it was Edward who rallied back hard, really starting to look comfortable on the Oratory court and turned it round to win 6/3 in the third, securing his final spot. In the other semi-final, Jenny Jones took on Peter Norris. Some great long rallies but it was Peter than once again dominated the score line with his difficult serving and crisp vollies. So into the final, would it be another 3 setter for Edward? Both sets of tennis were incredibly close, lots of long deuce games, notably one in particular taking over 10 minute to complete! It was Peter who saved his best tennis for the final and came out with some sensational shot making when it mattered, winning the match and the Championship 6/3 6/4. Credit to Edward who played lots of sets of tennis over the weekend and continued to fight for every point. Congratulations too to our Plate winner & finalist, Hugh Antrobus & Damian Mayer. A great weekend and great to have a competition finally back on the schedule, long May it continue.
