Category C Open Championship (Level Singles for Handicaps 20-29) 2012
Sep 28, 2012 - Sep 30, 2012 Moreton Morrell A Hamilton
Moreton Morrell Friday 28- Sunday 30 September 2012
In the first round of the 20-24 group, MMTCC professional Nick Jury played well to keep Andrew Petrie in check for two sets but tired in the third set which he lost 1/6. In a fine match, Mike Henman squeezed past Nick Warner 6/3, 4/6, 6/3. Henman was unable to continue his progress in the semi-final losing in the third set to Chris Herbert. MMTCC’s Tom Lewis made light work of Andrew Petrie, winning 6/2, 6/2. The final was finely balanced: Lewis lost the first set 3/6, but took the second set 6/4 and in the third Herbert was 3/2 when a debilitating fit of cramp brought an end to his challenge which was a sad and unsatisfactory end to a match that would have gone to the wire.
In the first round of the 25-29 band, MMTCC Chairman Andrew Hamilton fought back from 1/4 down in two sets to triumph over Nick Jones, Chairman of Tournaments and Fixtures 6/4, 6/4. Ronald Paterson defeated Richard Yorke-Long 6/4/ 5/6, 6/1. In the quarters, Hamilton proved too steady for John Conway of Prested winning in 3 sets, Simon Edmond struggled in the first set against Paterson which went to 5/5 but cruised to victory with a 6/0 second set win. John Miller won a close contest with Dougal Lockhart 6/4, 6/4, and Patrick Sutton, who had virtually stepped off a plane from Amsterdam, beat Nick Brodie 6/4, 6/3. In the semis Hamilton was unable to reproduce his earlier form against Edmond whose steady play merited a 6/0, 6/2 victory and Sutton received a walkover from Miller who suffered a damaged calf muscle. In the Final, Sutton highlighted his overall improvement with a 5/6, 6/3, 6/3 victory over Edmond in which he mixed steadiness with speed and power.
Patrick Sutton (25-29) and Tom Lewis (20-24) collect their awards from Andrew Hamilton.
