20-24 Handicaps:
Pick of the quarter finals was mercurial Mike Henman's 6/2, 5/6, 6/4 victory over MCC's Nick Warner whose retrieving skills stretched Henman's powers of concentration to the limit. Unfortunately the Ladies No. 2 Karen Hird was unable to participate due to an injury picked up during the French Open. Rene Schemschat a German student at Middlesex University and a member of the Development Squad proved too strong for Paul Wilson-Gunn. Philip Dunn of Bristol and Bath made short work of the first set against T&RA Tournaments and Fixtures supremo Nick Jones but Jones doggedly fought back and nearly took the second set having missed an opportunity to go 4/0 up.
In the semis, Tom Freeman's lack of experience cost him against Henman who was at his very best and Schemschat proved too steady for Dunn winning 6/1, 6/4.
The Final was an excellent contrast between Henman's aggression and Schemschat's steadiness and superior fitness. Henman began to run out of steam, just failing to take the second set. An excellent victory for Rene Schemschat whose 26 handicap will need an urgent review- providing he concentrates on hitting a heavier ball, he should progress to a single figure handicap.
25-29 Handicaps:
This year's Oxford University captain Simon Roach was too fit and steady for Alex Reynolds of Moreton Morrell who perished 6/3, 5/6, 2/6. Moreton Morrell chairman Andrew Hamilton had to work hard to overcome Aldona Greenwood 6/3, 6/4. Moreton's Tom Lewis, recently added to the development squad, reflected the strides he has made with a 6/2, 6/5 victory over Petworth's Chris Swann. Sixteen year old Lewis Williams of Prested and another Development Squad member, struggled against the local knowledge and tricky serves of John Miller succumbing 1/6, 2/6.
In the first semi-final T&RA Tennis chairman Andrew Hamilton struggled against the pace and youth of Simon Roach getting to 3/3 but no further in both sets. Tom Lewis's pacy returns of serve unsettled Miller who struggled to dominate in a 4/6, 2/6 defeat.
It was excellent to see two young students and members of the Development Squad playing energetic and entertaining tennis. Roach failed to cope with Lewis's powerful hitting and decision to hit the winning openings. They should easily move up to the 15-19 group next year.
