Amateur Doubles Championship
Report by Kees Ludekens
The 2009 Amateur Doubles Championship was dominated by Jamie Douglas and arguably the best front player in the Amateur game, Peter Wright. They sailed through their semi final without dropping a game against Charles Harcourt and Clive Bowsher who played some strong points.
In the second semi, Robert Hird and Neil Roxburgh were tested by Ali Hakimi and Edward Pearson but were able to benefit from greater experience and power in the vital games, winning 6/1, 6/3.
In the final, Roxburgh and Hird led in the first set 4/3 but when Douglas stepped up the pace they struggled and lost it 6/4. The momentum stayed with Douglas and Wright winning the second set 6/0 and then moving to a strong position in the third. Although Hird and Roxburgh staged a comeback to get to 5-all they were unable to prevent Douglas from retaining his title with his new partner, Peter Wright.
