*Public Schools Old Boys Doubles (Noel Bruce Cup)
The Malvern pairing of Mark Hubbard and Ben Bomford continued their good run to be crowned Champions of the Noel Bruce 2010. They defeated the very strong Harrow pair of Alex Titchener-Barrett and Charlie Danby in a very exciting Final. A timely victory given all the great work the school has done on the renovations to their two courts!
Malvern got off to a quick start and took a healthy lead in the opening game. At 10-2 up it looked a breeze. Harrow then got into the box and played beautiful rackets to tie the score. Malvern returned to serve and closed the game out 15/10. Harrow found their groove in second and depsite a later charge from Malvern leveled the scores at 1-1. Harrow then continued this run in the third game and, with some hard hitting from T-B, they put Malvern on the back foot and took a 2-1 lead by winning the third 15/5.
The fourth game proved to be rather deciding. it was nip tuck to 6/6 with some very long, exciting rallies. Harrow took an opportunity to pull away and got to 12/6. Malvern then found a rhythm and ran to 9 before, on reflection, a bad let call went agaisnt them (it happens) and the momentum shifted and they only got to 10. Harrow then pushed to 14 before Malvern saved two game balls. They then served to 12 before Harrow got back into the box. Again Malevern saved two game points and then served through to win the game 17/14 and level the match at 2-2.
The fifth game, again, was very well fought with some extremely long rallies, tripping over each other, contact, face to face action, woods, winners, rollers! think you get the picture, a bit of everything! Each side had good runs in the box but it was Malvern who ran away with it in the end and won the game 15/9 to take a 3-2 lead.
Having given themselves a truly commanding position malvern did not let the foot off the gas and the last game was one way traffic. Malvern crunched home by winning the sixth game 15/2 and the Match 4-2.
Well played to all finalists and congratulations on your efforts in the tournament.
Thanks also to Queens Club for their generous hosting of the tournament and we are all very excited about the new gallery that seemed to get the OK in the club EGM on Monday night! The start of a bigger and better game.
Well played all and see you at the next tournament!
