Public Schools Doubles Championships
Round-up of Public Schools Doubles
The Rackets Professionals Association organises an outstanding climax to a great season of Rackets
Those of us sweltering away in the galleries at Queen's Club last night could be forgiven for a degree of confusion. Its been a rackets season when all our cold Christmases came at once, but played out in court temperatures rarely seen so high before - exactly what season of the year were we in!?
The climax of the busy and thrilling tournament season was another seven-game final in the Public Schools Doubles First Pairs between Winchester, who were aiming to equal the record of holding the title three years in a row, and Cheltenham, where Karl Cook, Mark Briers, Charlie Liverton, and of course the Stout family have done so much to bring Rackets up to the boil. Cheltenham featured in three of the day's four Finals at a time when some schools are struggling to get past the second round. In the 1st Pair Final which started at 1700 on Friday, Cheltenham, inevitably including yet another Stout in the line-up, put up a tremendous fight only to lose it in the 7th game. It was a very entertaining and good-natured match featuring high quality play, and congratulations are owed to all four players on court.
The event was sponsored by Neptune Investment Management. Their Managing Director Robin Geffen presented the prizes, bringing to an end his second full season of support for both our games.
Organisation of the whole event is a tribute to Peter Brake, Rackets Master at Eton and David Makey, Rackets Master at Tonbridge. There were many Rackets fans sporting 'Support the Court' buttons to raise the profile of Tonbridge's fund-raising efforts to build a second rackets court.
The results of Finals day are summarised below; full results should be available under 'This Season's Tournaments'
