Welcome from the RPA
On behalf of the Rackets Professionals’ Association, I would like to welcome you all to The Queen’s Club for the National Schools’ Rackets Doubles and Girls’ Singles Rackets Championships 2023, the culmination of the season’s rackets for an ever-increasing number of school players – boys and girls – from around the country.
This year marks the 155th year since the National Schools’ Rackets Championship was first played, having originally been contested in 1868 by the top pair from each school. The National Schools’ Doubles Championship was the only schools’ doubles competition for 106 years until the 1970s and 1980s saw the introduction of three more cups: The Professional Association’s Cup for 2nd Pairs, the Eric Angus Cup for Colts (U16), and the Peter Gray Cup for Junior Colts (U15).
Recent years have seen an explosion in girls’ participation in the sport since the inaugural schoolgirl singles tournaments – the Judy Angus Cup for seniors and the Beryl Danby Cup for juniors – in 2011, and we are especially pleased that two new Girls’ Doubles Championships held here at Queen’s every December have also been a great success. The 2018 Senior Girls Doubles Final between Cheltenham and Wellington was the highest quality rackets seen in any girls’ tournament since their inception. This season’s Senior Girls Singles promises to match or even better that, if the expected duel between Amelia Drayson (Charterhouse)and Sophia Mordant (Marlborough) takes place in the much-anticipated final.
In all, 204 boys and 73 girls will compete in the six Championships here at Queen’s Club this week, over the course of seven days, with many matches of high intensity action and drama in what promises to be an exciting spectacle for everyone involved.
The boys’ and girls’ senior tournaments both have strong seeds who will be difficult to beat, and in the 2nd pair tournament Eton will be aiming to win the cup again having won every 2nd pair final since 2012!
The St Paul’s 1st pair will be looking to retain the Public Schools’ Doubles trophy, and they will be very hard to beat again this season, but many pairs from different schools, and in particular, the top four seeds, Tonbridge, Eton, Harrow, and Winchester, will all be in contention.
