Tom Billings beat Mike Bailey 3-0 in a great display of Rackets to be the first Qualifier for the Invitation singles. Some excellent retrieving from Billings left Bailey a bit perplexed in the first two games but the third game Mike found his length and took a commanding lead. Billings came back into the game and drew the scores level at 14-14. Set Three was chosen and after a few hands by each player Billings took the game, and the match, 3-0 15/8, 15/8, 16/13
Richard Owen continued his fine form from Manchester the week before to also Qualify by Beating Will Morse, who played excellent racket to qualify from his group. Richard was a little strong for Will from the outset but there were some tremendous rallies and the gallery got a real show but Richard prevailed 3-0 15/8, 15/7, 15/2
In the Final Richard played exceptionally well to fend off Billings’ challenge and secure a 3-0 victory in just over an hour. There were some quite sublime rallies and the standard of play from the two youngsters was hard hitting and most impressive for the gallery to watch. They really are up and coming stars. Owen though took the initiative in the match and proved that the front is where you dominate and did just that winning the match 3-0 15/8, 15/10, 15/13.
Billings and Owen are the two Qualifiers for this year’s Invitation Singles starting on the 10th November at The Queen’s Club.
