T&RA Life Member Ian de Sales La Terriere Has Died
Ian de Sales La Terriere passed away at home on 13th March aged 94. Ian was a T&RA Life Member, an Old Etonian and former Army Officer.
The T&RA is saddened by the passing of Ian de Sales La Terriere, who died at home at the age of 94 on 13th March. Ian was a Life Member of the T&RA as well as an Old Etonian known for his talents in Rackets, Real Tennis and – most notably – squash (he was a member of the winning 1964 Scottish team against England).
Shares Brigadier Andrew Myrtle with the T&RA, “I used to know Ian quite well when we were both young, but I only saw him once after he went to Scotland. I had to make a speech at a Falkland Palace Anniversary Dinner in Edinburgh... and I stayed the night with him. He was a good Rackets player but a very good squash player… He played squash for the Army for many years and I think he got to the semi finals of the Amateur Squash Singles when he probably had to compete with Nigel Broomfield.(This was long before the game went open.)
“He was an elegant and unexpectedly fast mover around the squash/Rackets courts. He was tall and long-legged for a top player,” Myrtle continues. “After leaving the Regular Army he worked with Dick Bridgeman in Justerini & Brooks, until he was sent North to run J & B’s Edinburgh office.”
In addition to squash, de Sales La Terriere was also a keen Real Tennis player. “From the moment I discovered Real Tennis (Jeu de Paume, Royal Tennis, Court Tennis), that was a game that took over much of my life,” he shared in an interview with Edinburgh Sports Club. “I learned at Bordeaux but played mostly at Falkland Palace (of course), but also in Melbourne, Ballarat, Romsey and Hobart, Tasmania; also Boston US. I played at Troon while that court was going, Newcastle, Queens and several other courts around Britain.”
Ian was the beloved husband of Rosie and of the late Sarah, father of James, Fiona, Michael, Peter, Rory (dec'd), Hugh and Robert.
