Real Tennis in Chicago
The original court opened in 1924 along with the completion of the clubhouse on Dearborn Parkway. The court had several years of play and was enjoyed by countless members. As a result of the Great Depression, the decision was made to turn the court tennis court into a lawn tennis facility in hopes of attracting new members. At the time, an indoor lawn tennis court was a unique offering in Chicago. The last court tennis club champion, Lucian E. Williams, was crowned in 1932.
Restoration work is intended to commence in early 2012. The RCC's longtime head professional, John Cashman, is excited to again be able to teach the great game of court tennis. Mr. Cashman is a native Philadelphian and started his career under the legendary Jimmy Dunn. Restoring the court tennis court will be a great addition to the club and will complement the club's robust rackets and squash programs. The RCC is eager to welcome players from all over the world to our unique club and great city.
