B Grade Charlie Vleck (Wellington) bt Harry Purton (Radley) 6/4
A very good day at both Radley and Wellington.
A Grade (Radley)
Group A produced some stirling matches throughout, with Henry Lidington (Bristol) working hard to win all 3 games, especially over Freddie Bristowe (Wellington), who also had a nail-biter in losing 4-5 to Ned Batstone (Monkton). Ned also beat Sam Corbett (Well) in another fine match – Sam got little reward for some strong hitting.
Group B was less close as Henry Stevinson (Manchester GS) won through, with only one close-ish match, 5-2 over Ed Crowston (Radley). Ben Yorston (Radley) also beat Ed before his week in the College play caught up with him along with an impressive Huw Thomas (Portsmouth GS) who claimed 2nd spot.
Huw gave Lidington his closest match in a very pleasing semi-final (4-6), though the match of the day was Henry Stevinson coming from 0-5 down to beat Ned Batstone, whose limited experience in matchplay was his downfall in the end, though his ability and temperament had impressed everyone all day.
The final was, relatively, an anti-climax. Though a very watchable match between two mobile and thoughtful competitors, Henry Lidington’s ability to put the ball away on the floor was decisive and 6-1 was a fair result after a long days play.
B Grade (Wellington)
On Sunday 4th December Wellington hosted the National School boys Real Tennis singles ‘B’ grade competition. Along with representatives from Radley and Clifton, Wellington was represented by Raghuv Kanwarr, Nikolas Homan, Charlie Vleck & Orlando Mallinson. Unfortunately at the start of the day Orlando was ill and had to withdraw.
The group stage saw some great tennis played, and in group A Charlie just edged 1st place over Harry Purton (Radley) and progressed to the semi finals, Raghuv finished 3rd with a good win over Jack Chesser (Clifton). In group B Niklas played solid tennis putting his railroad serve to good use to win both his matches to top the group and also progress to the semis. In the first Semi-final Charlie was too strong for Tom Panto (Clifton) and won 6/1 to face the winner of Niklas and Harry, it was a great match with long rallies but Niklas couldn’t find a way to get the ball past Harry and lost 6/2.
The final was always going to be a close game between Charlie & Harry as they went all the way to 5/4 in the group stage and the final was no different. The match swung both ways, but Charlie was able to hold the service end for the important points and won 6/4.
