The T&RA is sad to share that long-time Real Tennis player Nick Carew Hunt – a passionate Real Tennis player, market secretary of the former London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) and icon of London’s derivatives industry – died on 15 January after a short illness.
Simon Mansfield paid tribute to his friend, sharing, “The depths of Nick’s study and application to the mores of Tennis were practically unmatched, and his understanding of the finer points of handicap tournament strategy was profound. Nick was a great Tennis tourist; he enthusiastically joined the Trois Tripots in the Basque Country, three West Country tours, and it would be remiss not to mention the quiet pride that Nick took from his marvellous win together with Tom at the Boomerang in Melbourne.”
Known by many in the Real Tennis community, Nick was a founder member of the Marauders, a Hamster, a Jester and a Dedanist. Nick was a National League and Brodie Cup player for RTC, a match manager of several fixtures for RTC and the Hamsters, and also represented MCC in many inter-club matches
Some of his Real Tennis accomplishments include winning the Generations Cup at MCC on two occasions with his son, Tom; a record five wins in the De Laszlo Bowl; a King’s Goblet; a Divorce Doubles; and his annual attendance at the British Open (since 1993) and every World Championship held in the UK.
Outside of Real Tennis, Nick was a pillar of London’s futures community, serving as a longstanding market secretary of the former London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE). He led the trading venue through numerous phases of growth and innovation, including the Royal Exchange floor creation and the move to electronic futures trading.
The T&RA sends its sincere commiseration to Nick’s widow, Victoria, son, Tom and daughter, Catharine.
