On Tuesday 12th April evening the first ball was struck in the final of the British Open Doubles final, between number 1 seeds Ben Snell & Nick James against the number 2 seeds Tom Billings & Richard Owen, in front of a capacity crowd, every inch of the gallery was filled, and they were treated to one of the best Rackets matches ever played!
David Norman quoted "The best match in the 21st Century" and he wasn't wrong, from 1845 through to 2120 all four players played their very best Rackets throughout! Snell & James came out the blocks quickly taking the first game 15/12, only to see their lead eroded, losing the next two games 15/5 15/9. But then the superb Rackets became simply breath-taking! Billings came in to serve and was taken straight out, Snell showed his true colours and with his partner drove the game to a 10-0 lead! The crowd were ecstatic!! But this was a match with a twist, Billings and Owen weren't out of this game! They clawed it back to 10-10; then, somehow, incredibly won the game 15/12. The potential 2 games all was very suddenly a 3-1 Billings & Owen lead. Snell and James walking out with their heads down, staring at a likely defeat. But how wrong, as they forced their way back into the match with utter determination, winning the next two games 15/9 15/7, playing absolutely amazing Rackets! So everything came down to the final game. With all guns blazing, the youngsters held their nerve and dug deep, came out and fought to an 8-3 lead,. However, with nothing certain, they lost the serve leaving the top seeds with two hands: but this was to no avail and they were taken out quickly. Slowly but surely, the match was then closed out up by Billings and Owen; final score 12/15 15/5 15/9 15/12 9/15 7/15 15/9. A truly outstanding finale to a top class tournament.
David Norman and Peter Mallinson, representing sponsors Brown Advisory, presented the prizes.
