British Under 15 and Under 19 Doubles Championships 2017
Held this year on the new court at Wellington College, this tournament attracted young players from many clubs including Radley, Wellington, Holyport, Jesmond Dene, Oratory and Seacourt.
The Under 15 event was held on the Saurday and the round robin groups resulted in 2 excellent pairs making it through to the final. Max Jones (Seacourt) & Charlie Enticknap (Holyport) played against Hugo Pennant (Petworth) & Ethan Distelbrink (Wellington) in an excellent match with Hugo & Ethan coming out on top 8/5 to become British Under 15 Doubles Champions.
Sunday saw a near record entry for the U19 section with great matches all day. The standard of play was exceptional with youngsters playing off very decent handicaps as low as 17! The final group could have gone to any of the pairs but it was Radley pair Oliver Martyn-Hemphill & Freddie White who progressed through to play Wellington pair Freddie Bristowe & Sam Corbett.
The final was exceptional. It was probably the best quality junior doubles match that I have ever had the pleasure to watch! In a thrilling match the first set went to the Wellington pair but then the Radley boys fought back to take the second. It reached 4-4 all in the final set and then Oliver & Freddie just got their noses ahead at the right moment to win the coveted title. The final score was 4/6 6/1 6/4.
