Congratulations to John Lumley on getting through to the Final Eliminator of the World Championship Singles. In a best of 3 matches format John beat Steve Virgona 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 to qualify for the Final Eliminator without needing the third match.
Meanwhile, in a best of 13 sets format at Aiken, after a thrilling first day's play Ben Taylor-Matthews is tied at 2 sets all (6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6) with Aiken professional Nicky Howell. A further 4 sets will be played at 6pm (Eastern Time - 4 hours behind UK) on 27 March with up to 5 sets to be played on 29 March at 4pm (Eastern Time).
On day two Nick Howell has moved closer to a second consecutive Final Eliminator, winning three out of four sets against Ben Taylor-Matthews in Aiken, 6/1 1/6 6/2 6/3. Nick now leads 5-3 going into the final day's play.
Nicky Howell won the 9th and 10 sets 6-5, 6-5 against Ben Taylor-Matthews in Aiken to progress to the World Singles Championships Final Eliminator against John Lumley which will be played in Aiken in mid-May for the right to challenge incumbent champion Camden Riviere for the World Championship in Newport on September 23rd, 25th and 27th. The final score of 4/6 6/1 1/6 6/4 6/1 1/6 6/3 6/3 6/5 6/5 might be thought slightly harsh on BTM who produced one of his best performances to push Nicky over three days on Nicky’s home court and in front of the partisan but fair-minded Aiken crowd. The match was a great advert for the best of 13 sets format, and was brilliantly run by the Aiken Tennis Club, marker Ivan Ronaldson and referee Matty Ronaldson. This was your correspondent’s first visit to Aiken but having now experienced the legendary Aiken hospitality will not be the last.
