Conor Medlow overcame a strong challenge from Jamie Douglas to win the 2015 Amateur Championship. Both players had reached the final by beating their own doubles partners in the semi-finals.
Medlow started the first set by taking the first two games before Douglas levelled at 2-all. Then Medlow moved 4-2 ahead, again to be pegged back to 4-all. But it was Douglas who maintained the momentum and took the next two games and the first set 6/4. This stung Medlow who responded by taking the next set to love, 6/0, and established an early lead in the third. With Medlow threatening, Douglas found his length and started to hit a succession of main-wall-dedans winners and dragged himself back into the set and into a 5-3 lead. Medlow then responded and levelled at 5-5, before Douglas won an enthralling eleventh game and the set 6/5. A close fourth set was defined by Medlow's slow ascendancy, winning the big points, but still needing to serve tightly. A tense set saw Medlow win through 6/4 and level the match into an inevitable fifth set. Douglas continued to fight hard but Medlow had the edge and closed out the match 6/2.
This repeated Medlow's 2011 victory over Douglas, securing his second Amateur Singles title. The two players depart for Hobart next month, as team mates, representing GB in the Bathurst Cup.
